Top 10 Ways our Microschool enhances the homeschooling experience
For homeschooling families, education is more than just academics. It’s about fostering curiosity, building character, and creating lifelong learners. At Acton Academy Columbus, we strive to honor these values while offering a supportive community to enhance the homeschooling experience. Here are 10 ways our microschool enriches and elevates the journey for homeschooling families:
1. Hands-On Learning Through Quests
At Acton Academy Columbus, our curriculum is built around quests—project-based learning experiences that engage learners in solving real-world challenges. For example, during our Architecture Quest, learners studied blueprints and architectural models before designing their own model schools. This interdisciplinary project required math, measurements, and creative thinking as learners calculated dimensions, scaled their designs, and integrated aesthetic elements. To add a real-world element, a local architect visited to critique and provide feedback on their work, giving learners invaluable insights and a sense of accomplishment.
Our quests are not only academically rigorous but also designed to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity—skills that align perfectly with the goals of many homeschooling families.
2. A Vibrant Community for Social Learning
Homeschooling families often seek meaningful social opportunities for their children, and our microschool provides just that. With mixed-age studios, learners collaborate, mentor one another, and build friendships that go beyond academics.
For instance, during our mock presidential election, learners worked together to form parties, create campaign strategies, and debate issues. This experience fostered teamwork, public speaking, and an understanding of civic responsibility. Activities like these offer the socialization many homeschooling families desire while maintaining a focus on character and values.
3. Individualized Learning Plans
One of the greatest strengths of homeschooling is the ability to tailor education to each child’s needs. At Acton Academy Columbus, we extend this personalization through individualized learning plans. Learners set their own goals, track their progress, and reflect on their achievements. Our guides act as facilitators, helping each learner navigate their unique journey.
For example, some of our elementary learners became fascinated with building their own aquarium. As part of their passion project, they researched materials, including acrylic glass and different types of adhesives, and planned a setup for a snake’s tank. They were able to get much of the materials they needed and while the project didn’t work out as planned, the process taught them invaluable lessons about budgeting, problem-solving, and resilience. The experience highlighted the importance of persistence and learning from failure—skills that are foundational for success in any endeavor.
4. Encouraging Self-Directed Learning
Homeschooling parents often emphasize independence, and we build on that foundation by fostering self-directed learning. In our studios, learners are empowered to take ownership of their education, choosing what to work on and how to approach challenges.
During our World-Class Conversationalist Quest, learners practiced active listening and meaningful dialogue. They set personal goals for improving their communication skills, reflecting daily on their progress. This emphasis on self-direction prepares learners for lifelong success, aligning with homeschooling families’ desire to cultivate independent thinkers.
5. Engaging STEM Activities
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education is a vital part of modern learning, and we bring it to life through hands-on projects. For example, our learners recently participated in a bridge-building challenge, where they designed and tested structures using everyday materials. They learned about engineering principles, problem-solving, and teamwork.
For younger learners in the Growth Studio, STEM activities are woven into play-based learning. One popular activity involved experimenting with density by layering liquids in jars. These interactive experiences make complex concepts accessible and exciting for learners of all ages.
6. Fostering Creativity Through the Arts
Creativity is at the heart of our microschool’s approach. Whether it’s visual art, music, or storytelling, we provide ample opportunities for learners to express themselves. During our recent Mandala Art Challenge, learners explored symmetry, patterns, and cultural significance, creating intricate designs that reflected their individuality.
Additionally, our loose parts studio in the Spark Studio encourages young learners to engage in open-ended play, building structures and crafting imaginative creations. This approach nurtures creativity while developing problem-solving and fine motor skills.
7. Developing Real-World Skills
One of the unique advantages of our microschool is the emphasis on real-world applications. During our Personal Finance Quest, middle school learners explored budgeting, saving, and investing. They analyzed mortgage rates using Google Sheets, comparing interest over time to understand financial decision-making.
Another standout project was our Restaurant challenge, where learners designed and built their own restaurant and cooked / baked goods. They then sold these goods to parents, allowing them to practice their entrepreneurship skills. From measuring ingredients to marketing their products, they gained hands-on experience in running a business—a practical skill set that complements academic learning.
8. Character and Leadership Development
At Acton Academy Columbus, we prioritize character development as much as academics. Learners participate in studio contracts that outline expectations for behavior, accountability, and mutual respect. These agreements are learner-driven, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
For example, during our Gratitude Video Project, learners interviewed peers and staff, creating a compilation of what everyone was thankful for. This activity not only built technical skills but also reinforced empathy, gratitude, and community spirit—qualities that homeschooling families often seek to instill.
9. Mindfulness and Emotional Well-Being
Homeschooling families value the whole child—mind, body, and spirit. To support this holistic approach, we integrate mindfulness practices into our daily routines. During our Nature Club, learners practiced Sitspots, where they spent time observing their surroundings in silence, journaling their reflections. These moments of stillness help learners build focus, reduce stress, and connect with the world around them.
In our Whole Health Quest, learners explored emotional and cognitive health, discussing the benefits of practices like meditation and gratitude. These activities provide tools for managing emotions and building resilience, enhancing learners’ overall well-being.
10. A Seamless Partnership with Families
Finally, we view our relationship with homeschooling families as a partnership. We welcome parents to share their insights and participate in their child’s educational journey. During our kickoff party, families ceremoniously committed to their learning journeys, reinforcing the shared mission of growth and discovery. In addition, families get together annually for our thanksgiving dinner as well our camping trip.
We also communicate regularly through pictures, progress updates and celebrations, such as exhibitions of learning. These events give parents a window into their child’s accomplishments and the community they’re a part of.
Enhancing the Homeschooling Journey
At Acton Academy Columbus, we honor the values and aspirations of homeschooling families while providing the resources, community, and opportunities to enrich their educational experience. From hands-on quests to mindfulness practices, our microschool bridges the gap between home education and traditional schooling, creating a space where learners thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
