An Acton Learner

Situations That May Require Further Conversation
Some learners may thrive at Acton with the right support and readiness. These situations may require deeper discussion with families:
- Difficulty working independently
- Limited experience making choices about learning
- Dependence on adult direction to begin or complete tasks
- Some difficulty working collaboratively with peers
- Anxiety around open-ended challenges
Acton is a learner-driven environment, which means learners must gradually develop the ability to take initiative, reflect on their progress, and engage in community problem solving.
For some learners, a transition period or additional support may help determine fit.
When Acton May Not Be the Right Fit
- Require constant adult direction to remain engaged
- Are unwilling to take responsibility for their actions
- Repeatedly disrupt the learning environment
- Are unwilling to follow studio agreements
- Require intensive behavioral or therapeutic support beyond what a small learner-driven community can provide
Acton operates with very few adults in the learning environment by design. The studio depends on learners taking responsibility for maintaining a safe, respectful, and productive community.
