Socratic Seminars

Importance of critical thinking Skills

The 21st century does not call on us to memorize facts. We can look those up in an instant. It does require our learners to develop the 4 C’s of education: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.

Critical thinking skills are not developed by asking our young learners to regurgitate facts learned through textbooks. Socratic questioning promotes critical thinking by challenging students to develop a deeper understanding of issues and becoming systems thinkers.

ACTON APPROACH

Launches / Closes

At Acton Academy, every day starts with a launch - a gathering of learning as they begin their day’s journey. The launch includes open-ended, thought provoking questions posed by guides and learners to foster discussion. Student provide their own thoughts, listen to other learners, and provide input for further discussion on topics. Socratic launches and closes promote the 4 C’s of education while helping students gain confidence in understanding the value of their contribution.

Role of Guides

A cornerstone hallmark of Acton Academy is the role of the guide in never answering a question. Our guides promote critical thinking and create an environment for learners to find success in their journey. Students are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers from their peers and other sources.

“In my 30 years as a teacher, coach, mentor… I have never come across a strategy more powerful than Socratic seminars to engage kids in critical thinking and critical leading.”

- Oscar Graybill, Director - SocraticSeminars
